2011 SPORTS & REC PLUS BASKETBALL

The league is sponsored by Sports & Rec Plus, which s is a worldwide ministry helping churches use sports and other forms of recreation (camping, drama, mission trips, arts & crafts, social activities) for outreach, evangelism, church planting, and church growth.  This is done by providing resources, publishing a newsletter, developing models for ministry, and being available for individual and church consulting.

LEAGUE DIRECTOR: Rick Mitchell – Office & Cell: (571)278-5987     (24/7)

THINGS TO DO & KNOW BEFORE THE LEAGUE BEGINS

  1. League fees and roster must be turned in by Tuesday, December 21th.  Players must be 15 years or older by January 1st.  Make checks out to “Sports & Rec Plus.”
  2. Every team must have at least 1 person approved by Fairfax County as a Volunteer Building Supervisor who can open, inspect, set-up, and close the gym, & make sure their team’s game begins on time.  Go to a library to take the steps to be approved.  Also, you can go to this Web site at:  http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/rec/team_sports/VolBld_Dir.htm
  3. Recruit several people from your church to be able to run the shot-clock/keep the scorebooks at your games.  If a team does not provide someone for one of these positions at each game, your team will lose possession at the beginning of the game, and each quarter that you do not provide someone.  For example, if you provide someone to do so at half-time, you will lose possession at the beginning of the 1st and 2nd quarters.
  4. Practice.  You can reserve a practice time by contacting Rick, and he will assign you gym space in December.  Someone at the practice must be a Volunteer Building Supervisor.
  5. In the event of bad weather, if Fairfax County Schools close for the day, or let out early for the day, then our games are called off as well.  You can call Rick if you are not sure about any games/closings.

LEAGUE DETAILS/RULES

  1. The purpose of the league will be to glorify God by providing a basketball league where:
  2. bulletChurches have an opportunity to reach the lost or unchurched and their families by inviting them to participate in the league, where Christians should strive to set the best example they can of obedience to Christ, joy of life, and sportsmanship.
bulletProviding a place for Christian fellowship where growth and accountability occurs through competing in basketball and maintaining a Christ-like attitude
  3. Women are not permitted to play in the league.
  4. Games will begin in January and continue through March/April.  There will be one division for regular season play.  There will be a post-season single-elimination tournament, which all teams participate in.  The top-ranked team receives a bye in this tournament.
  5. To be eligible to play in the tournament and/or all-star game, a player must have been present and on the roster for at least three regular season games.  The burden of proof for this is on the coach.
  6. Rosters and proofs of residency should be brought to all games by the team coach.

GAME REGULATIONS

  1. Each team should have a good ball they can use in their games.
  2. One team will supply a scorekeeper and the other team will supply someone to run the clock.  They do not have to have previous experience.  We will train them.  This person is not eligible to play in the game.  If your team does not provide someone for one of these positions at each of your games, your team will lose a possession at the beginning of the game, and each quarter that you do not provide someone to do so.  For example, if you provide someone to fill the position at half-time, you will lose possession at the beginning of the first and second quarters, but will receive possession in the third quarter.
  3. For the first game of each evening, (A game prior to 7:45 p.m.) there will be a ten minute grace period if one or both teams are short players.  There is no grace period for all other games.  Once a game is forfeited it is final.  There are no “un-forfeits.”  A team can still play a game once it has been forfeited, but that game will not be officiated, timed according to regulation play, nor will a score be kept.  The unofficial game will also be cut short, if necessary, to allow the next teams time to warm up before their game.
  4. All games will begin and end with prayer at center court.  One team will pray at the beginning of the game, and the other team will pray at the end of the game.
  5. Teams must have 4 players to begin a game.  A team can also end with 4.  If a team’s eligible players gets down to 3 for any reason (injury, elimination due to fouls, and all other reasons) the game is forfeited.
  6. Fans may cheer and encourage their team, but fans must not…
  7. bulletBring food or drink into the gym
bulletSit on the same side of the gym as the players/score table
bulletStep/walk on the court (before, during, after games)
    bulletUse profanity
bulletTalk to scorekeeper/bookkeeper during game (incl. half-time, time-outs)
bulletTalk to officials during the game (incl. half-time, time-outs)
    bulletHarass players of either team
    bulletDistract players while shooting free-throws
bulletWalk behind the baskets while play is occurring on that end of the court
bulletAny such behavior may result in the fan’s ejection from the gym
  8. Games consist of four 10-minute quarters.  Time will stop upon whistle only (not on made baskets) for the last minute of the 1st and 3rd quarters, and the last two minutes of the 2nd and 4th quarters.  Each team will have two (2) one minute time outs per half.  Unused time-outs do not carry over to the next half.  Teams will be granted 1 minute between quarters, and 3 minutes between halves, unless games are running behind.  Tie games will be extended by 3 minute periods until one team wins.  The clock stops on whistles in the last minute of overtime periods.

RULES DURING GAME PLAY

  1. The league follows official High School Basketball rules, with previously mentioned additions, as well as the following noted rules and additions.
  2. On foul shots, players enter the lane after the ball hits the rim.
  3. Use of foul language heard by officials, or the league director/assistant director may result in a technical foul and/or expulsion.  A warning does not have to be given.
  4. Dunking, or an attempt to dunk (rim must be touched by ball or player) results in a technical foul for that team, disqualification of points scored on the play, and ejection of the player who attempted the dunk.  If an attempted dunk results in a damaged basket (net, rim, or any other part) that player will be responsible for paying the school/county for any such damages and pay the league for any referee fees for all games missed due to an unusable basket.  That player nor his team may not play in any further games until all monies are paid.
  5. No pockets on pants.
  6. For any reason, if a player is ejected from a game, he AND the coach must CALL Rick Mitchell or his designee and report it.  Rick or his designee, after a conference with the ejected player, will determine if the player may return to play for the next game.  If the player competes in a game(s) without Rick’s or his designee's approval, that game(s) will be forfeited.
